Basic Steps to get your business online!Getting on the web is easy an profitable as long as you cover all the bases1. Select a name that you want to register as your domain name. A domain name is represented as www.yourname.com To see if the domain name that you would like is available visit http://rs.internic.net/cgi-bin/whois/ . Type in yourname.com and see whether or not it is available.Registering your name will cost an initial fee of $100 up front for the first two years, and then $35 each year thereafter. TEC will register your name if you haven't already done so. You will have to provide ISP ( Internet Service Provider) information when you register.
2. Choose a location is store your web. You need someone to store your website information and graphics. It will have to be a computer that is connected to the internet 24 hours a day. Most providers will charge anywhere from $100 to $1000 per year for web storage based on the size of the site. You get what you pay for though, and the lower end ISP's usually oversell the pipeline to the internet which will result in slower access times. Also, the prices vary with the amount of service the ISP will provide. If you are very computer literate, you can pay somewhat less and maybe do some of the programming yourself. For the average website owner, you can expect to pay $400 to $600 per year for your site. Usually along with housing your site, the ISP gives you 1 or more e-mail addresses. If you don't already have an ISP in mind, TEC can recommend one.
3. Site Design is next. You may already have one partially designed, or need a design from scratch. TEC can help out with either option.
4. TEC will then make your site web ready! We will take the graphics, text and forms (if any) and turn it into a multi-page site that you can be proud of. We will also add key words to your site so that it can be found in the major search engines.
5. After your approval, TEC will upload the site to the ISP and register it with the major search engines, along with many other search engines. After that, you can add the website address to your business cards, literature etc.
All this takes about 1 week for smaller sites. Larger sites may take up to 4 weeks to complete. You can expect to pay anywhere from $400 - $800 for a basic 3 - 10 page site. Larger sites are obviously more expensive.
